labour migration
   Since the recession of the early 1990s, labour has had to become more mobile. The Conservative cabinet minister Norman (later Lord) Tebbitt became notorious for his advice to the unemployed to ‘get on your bike’ (meaning to move house in search of work). Many unemployed gravitated from the north to the southeast of England, where the statistical rate of unemployment was lower by as much as 25 percent. In some cases these migrants were unable to find work, and were thus worse off than if they had stayed at home where they had the support of friends and family. Television reports of homelessness on the streets of London and other major urban centres attributed blame for the problem to this advice.
